The US Postal Service (USPS) has several different types of envelopes and postage rates for them. Letter rate covers standard business and manila envelopes. Larger and thicker envelopes require a larger rate and must be sent as a package. However, if you have a card that is a bit bigger than a letter, you can use the flat rate. There is also a flat rate for postcards.

The USPS has two different categories of envelopes, and they rate letter-size mail differently than non-letter-sized mail. When choosing an envelope for letter-sized mail, you should try to use one that is light colored and doesn't have a brilliant hue. In order to qualify for a letter-sized rate, the envelope should be rectangular with an aspect ratio of 1.3 to 2.5. The USPS website offers a helpful template to help you determine which size you'll need.
The first-class letter will continue to be $0.58. In 2022, the commercial-base rate will be $2.17. This will include online and meter postage. That's a savings of 8.6% for most mail. Whether you're sending a postcard or a bill, USPS has an envelope that will fit your needs. If you're sending a small package, the first-class letter rate will remain at $0.58. The second-class rate will remain at $2.17.
